Although not always the case, submitting a FOIA request is not always cost-free. Government agencies are permitted to charge fees to cover the time spent searching for records, reviewing responsive materials, redacting exempt information, and reproducing releasable documents.

Agency fees can range from just a few dollars to several thousand, depending on the scope and volume of records involved. FOIA Professional Services helps clients navigate this process and works to keep agency fees aligned with the budget for each request. If cost is a concern, our team can design a FOIA request that maximizes the value of the information obtained while staying within your financial limits.

We never proceed with agency fees without prior client approval. We treat every fee as if it were our own investment and prioritize transparency throughout the process. When fees appear excessive, we seek clarification from the agency regarding what information is likely to be released versus redacted. If our experience suggests that key information may not be disclosed, we clearly communicate those risks so clients can make informed decisions in their best interest.

All agency fees are paid directly by FOIA Professional Services and are reimbursed on the client’s next invoice once approved.
